The Face Series: Part 7 “The Mystic Eye” / Cydonia Region / Mars

Whereas the eye on the “lion” side of the Face is nothing but a rubble filled “eye socket”, the eye on the “ape-man” side has always shown evidence of something more sculptural. Even the original Viking orbiter imagery revealed a feature like an eyeball within an eye shape. Given the depth of erosion on this side of the Face it is remarkable that we can still make anything out at all - because if this eye is artificial then we are only seeing the ruined foundations of the original construct. The MRO image from 2007 shows the lattice-work of walled cells that curves around the bottom of the eye, which mimics how the eyelid/ skin/ muscle would be shaped. This too seems like a match between sculpture and underlying architecturual sub-structure. De-correlation stretch analysis of Mars Odyssey thermal imagery reveals that the eye has a different mineral composition than its immediate surroundings. The eye also shows different reflective properties than its immediate surroundings and can remain dark even when everything around it is washed out with glare.
