Symbolism and the STS-115 Mission Patch

For many years the Enterprise Mission has argued that since its inception NASA's manned space programme has been steeped in hidden symbolism drawing on ancient Egyptian and Masonic traditions. Another claimed aspect of this esoteric NASA symbolism is the use of the numbers 19.5, 39 and 33 - the last being the number of degrees in Scottish Rite Freemasonry. The Enterprise Mission believes that this hidden symbolism derives from the strong historic links between NASA and Scottish Rite Freemasonry. There is nothing secret about these connections and Freemasons are extremely proud of the contribution that their fraternity has made to the American Space programme. The museum in the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple at 1733 16th Street, Washington DC, has a fine selection of space exhibits donated by NASA astronauts and officials, including the Masonic flag "Buzz" Aldrin took to the Moon.

A striking example of NASA's use of symbolism is the mission patch for the STS-115 mission by the Atlantis space shuttle. Many have commented on its apparently direct reference to the reverse side of the Great Seal of the United States - the mysterious "unfinished pyramid" with a "radiant eye" capstone hovering above it. This is most familiar from its depiction on the one Dollar bill. There are many modern names for this design, but its origins ultimately come from the ancient Egyptian mystical concept of an "Eye of Horus". This linked capstones, "eyes" and sources of light - especially the Sun - with the arrival of spiritual enlightenment.

In the case of the STS-115 patch the "unfinished pyramid" is created by the foreshortened view of the solar panels that Atlantis delivered to the International Space Station (ISS). The Sun as "Eye of Horus" has not yet rotated into the capstone position, but there is a hint that it will soon do so and complete the pyramid. In addition to this symbolism the design of the patch appears to be built around a number of 19.5 degree angles - of which more later.

To see why NASA might be using such powerful symbolic imagery as the "unfinished pyramid" we must first take a short look into the origins of its adoption in America and the Egyptian derivation of its meaning.

The design of the Great Seal of the United States took several years, many redesigns, four committees and the deliberations of fourteen men. The suggestion that the design should include the novel idea of combining an unfinished pyramid with an eye in a floating capstone was made by William Barton. Barton was one of four men involved in the deliberations on the Great Seal who many Freemasons identify as being members of their fraternity.

The final transfer of the Great Seal to the one Dollar Bill came after 1934 following a suggestion to use the Seal on coins made to President Roosevelt by Henry Wallace .

"Roosevelt, as he looked at the colored reproduction of the Seal, was first struck with the representation of the all-seeing eye—a Masonic representation of the Great Architect of the Universe. Next, he was impressed with the idea that the foundation for the new order of the ages had been laid in 1776 but that it would be completed only under the eye of the Great Architect. Roosevelt, like myself, was a 32nd Degree Mason. He suggested that the Seal be put on the dollar bill."

Surprisingly, William Barton's "unfinished pyramid" has never ever been included in the official canon of Masonic symbolic imagery.

So, what is the significance of the "unfinished pyramid" and why is it so popular with Freemasons, even though it is not an official Masonic symbol?

To understand the symbolism of the unfinished pyramid, with its missing capstone, we must go back to ancient Egypt. The religion of the ancient Egyptians metaphorically linked any source of light with spiritual enlightenment. They also linked by association the eye as a collector of light to the sources of light. So the Sun and Moon were often described as "eyes". Through the equating of sunrise with resurrection the god Horus became the Egyptian's patron of the rising Sun. The rising Sun and anything that reflected its light first thus became the "Eye of Horus".

Egyptian pharaohs incorporated this symbolism into their pyramids and obelisks by plating their capstones with polished gold or electrum so that they would flash light from the Sun even before it had risen at dawn. These twilight flashes of light represented the arrival of enlightenment - a symbolic "Eye of Horus".

Despite its name Scottish Rite Freemasonry has its roots in 18th century pre-revolutionary France at a time when its Masonic lodges were obsessed with the spiritual wisdom and symbolism of ancient Egypt. As a result Freemasons became inheritors of a tradition in which "radiant eyes", pyramids and their capstones are symbols of enlightenment. As one writer on Freemasonry put it:


"These considerations lead us to an interesting topic, the Eye of Mind or the Eye of Horus ... and conveying the idea of the 'All seeing Eye'. The end set before the Egyptian neophyte was illumination, that is to be 'brought to light'. The Religion of Egypt was the Religion of the Light".

In the Great Seal of the United States the unfinished pyramid symbolises that enlightenment - the completion of the "Great Work" - has still to be achieved. The radiant eye in the capstone - the "Eye of Horus" - descending upon the pyramid signals that the Great Work is close to completion. At a personal level the completion of the Great Work represents a Freemason's spiritual destiny. However, historically many American Freemasons have also linked the Great Work to the enlightening destiny of the United States itself. The man who put the Great Seal of the United States on the one Dollar bill expressed the sentiment this way:

"It will take a more definite recognition of the Grand Architect of the Universe before the apex stone is finally fitted into place and this nation in the full strength of its power is in a position to assume leadership among the nations in inaugurating "the new order of the ages."

Here Wallace seems to be expressing a wish that America would become the world's "capstone nation" - its source of enlightenment. Wallace may be part of a long tradition of utopian visions for the United States. Some even believe that Francis Bacon's allegorical story of a New Atlantis ruled by an esoteric House of Solomon was intended as a blue print for the development of America. It would be natural for Freemasons to link Bacon's House of Solomon with their own Masonic Temples built to the same proportions as Solomon's Temple. Is the United States seen as the new Atlantis?

So why would NASA be using such powerful symbolism as the "unfinished pyramid" during the Atlantis space shuttle mission to the ISS?

At this point we can only speculate. The most mundane answer is that the Herculean task of building the ISS is itself seen as symbolic of the efforts to complete the Great Work. However, a more startling possibility is that those behind the design of the mission patch see the manned space programme as the means by which the Great Work and the "unfinished pyramid" will be completed. The position of the space shuttle in the centre line of the "unfinished pyramid" implies that it will fly through its top and so complete it by becoming its capstone. The symbolism is strengthened even further by the fact that in this case the shuttle represented is the Atlantis.

Cynics often say that NASA perseveres with the space shuttle fleet because it is needed to complete the ISS - and that the ISS is being built to give the shuttles a job to do. NASA appears to have a more dramatic vision for the ISS. When the ISS project began the BBC aired an edition of its Horizon science documentary series that was highly critical of its projected $100 billion cost and apparent uselessness. When their interviewer put this argument to the chief of NASA's manned space programme they were stunned into silence by his cheerful reply -

" Well, who doesn't want to go out there and meet other civilisations?"

This linking of the ISS project with the mission of the starship Enterprise seemed to be complete fantasy - unless NASA's space programme has encountered evidence of another civilisation they are not at liberty to publicise. At NASA's birth the "Brookings Report" suggested that it might be wise to hold back on any discoveries involving extraterrestrial civilisations.

An important aim of the Great Work is to find a "formula" that will bring human consciousness into harmony with the Universe around us and the mind of God. Once this enlightenment is achieved it is believed that, like Plato's fabled Atlantis before its corruption, humans will live in peace and achieve things beyond our greatest expectations. Enlightenment proceeds from revelation. The two words are almost inter-changeable. Does NASA know something that once revealed would make humanity's current conflicts seem trivial and petty? It will be interesting to see what transpires when the ISS is finally completed.

As if the visual symbolism of the STS-115 mission patch wasn't striking enough, the patch is also suffused with hidden geometrical symbolism. Measurements of the internal geometry in printed versions of the image revealed a number of angles that fell midway between 19 and 20 degrees. Within the vagaries of an electronic pixellated image it is not possible to precisely determine what these angles are. As they fall closest to 19.5 degrees, for the purposes of this article we will call them 19.5 degrees. Interestingly, the proportions of the "unfinished pyramid" implied by the trapezium shape of the blue solar panels is dictated by 19.5 degree angles.

As the following illustrations reveal there is another 19.5 degree angle that is forming an invisible capstone to the "unfinished pyramid". To see why there might be a link between 19.5 degrees and the completion of the Great Work it is necessary to briefly go over some of the Enterprise Mission's discoveries.

The hidden use in America of 19.5 degree symbolism appears to go at least as far back as the founding of the United States. The derivation of 19.5 and the number 39 are unique to a particular type of tetrahedral geometry. If we circumscribe a tetrahedron within a spinning sphere so that one corner is anchored at a polar axis - then the other three corners will touch the sphere at the 19.47 degree latitude in the opposing hemisphere. (The 19.47 is usually abbreviated to 19.5). The angular distance between 19.5 degrees north latitude and 19.5 degrees south is 39 degrees.

Now, in the Enterprise Mission's hyper-dimensional physics model rotating masses are able to tap into a source of energy that fills hyperspace. The extent to which this energy is tapped is determined by a body's angular momentum, i.e. its mass times the speed of rotation. Spinning planets obviously have a large angular momentum. In the model this energy flowing from hyperspace is further ordered by resonance into the geometry of Platonic Solids. In their model by far the most common of these 3-D resonance patterns is the tetrahedron. The Enterprise Mission has identified that for most of the planets this hyper-dimensional energy wells up at 19.5 degree latitudes. Fluid mechanics in a rotating body dictate that heated material will eventually rise to the surface in only one place. On Jupiter the 19.5 degree "hot spot" is the Great Red Spot, on Neptune the Great Dark Spot, on Mars the massive Olympus Mons volcano - and Earth's greatest non-tectonic volcanic hot spot is Hawaii at 19.5 degrees north.

It is curious that the STS-115 mission patch should therefore be associating the obscure geometry of the 19.5 degree angle with the "unfinished pyramid", its capstone and by implication the completion of the Great Work. The ability to artificially and efficiently draw energy from hyperspace would immediately solve humanity's problems with energy supply and the pollution that accompanies current energy sources. A proper understanding of hyper-dimensional physics would also allow us to master the force of gravity and allow the colonisation of space to begin in earnest.

The symbolism of the mission patch therefore raises the following question - does NASA know something about an impending technological break-through that the rest of us are unaware of? If so, what is their time table for revealing it?

Returning to the use of 19.5 degree symbolism in this mission we find that it does not just manifest itself in the STS-115 mission patch. It also shows up in the stars at the exact time the Atlantis was launched.

The Enterprise Mission has stirred-up much heated debate with its ritual alignment theory. In this theory the suspected group of esoteric initiates at NASA attempt to synchronise mission schedules to co-incide with a system of star alignments based on Egyptian/Masonic symbolism. This involves the stars Sirius, Regulus and the three belt stars of Orion, (Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka). According to Egyptologists the ancient Egyptians associated these stars with the deities Isis, Horus and Osiris respectively. This theorised symbolic system also involves seeking to match major events to times when any of these stars are at a 19.5 or 33 degrees altitude to the horizon. Simple statistical analysis of space shuttle missions suggests that there may be something real behind this idea. Absolute proof of the theory could only occur if the users of such a system came out openly and talked about it in public.

Suffice to say at the launch of the 19th space shuttle mission to the International Space Station this ritual alignment model was working very well. If we feed the map co-ordinates for the Kennedy Space Centre from the Times World Atlas into RedShift we find that at the precise time Atlantis was launching.......drum roll......the Orion's Belt star Alnitak was at exactly 19.5 degrees altitude in the western sky.

Stars change altitude very quickly at the sub-tropical latitudes of Florida. Five minutes before launch Alnitak was at 20.6 degrees altitude. Five minutes after launch it was at 18.4 degrees.

NASA has a strong attachment to the constellation Orion with its association with the Egyptian god Osiris. Orion forms the focus of the logo it adopted for the whole Apollo Moon project. Of all the different Egyptian Sun gods, it was Osiris that the Greeks chose to identify with their own Sun god Apollo.

Almost predictably, Orion is also the name NASA is giving to its new spaceship for its return to manned Lunar exploration. As if to confirm the Enterprise Mission's ritual alignment model the three belt stars of Orion are given special prominence in the logo for the Orion project.

So we find that the Atlantis STS-115 mission slots into a continuing pattern of symbolism around the ancient Egyptian "Religion of the Light" and tetrahedral geometry. Perhaps the density of 19.5 degree references in the STS-115 mission was inspired by it being the 19th mission to the ISS.

There is one last example to be shown here that hints once again at this tetrahedral geometry. The STS-115 mission patch boundary is proportioned to the rectangle that circumscribes an equilateral triangle. A regular tetrahedron has facets comprising four of these triangles. As the following illustration shows this arrangement also defines four angles of 19 degrees from each of the four corners of the rectangle. Nineteen degrees is not 19.5 degrees - but it comes suspiciously close.

So now we know the extent of the apparent NASA symbolism and its general meaning. The one thing we don't know in detail is what kind of agenda all this is sanctifying.
